Technical Leadership in Action: Influencing Without Authority - Supervising, influencing and championing without formal authority
Leadership is not only about job titles. Research Technical Professionals (RTPs) often supervise, guide, influence and champion others every day, but do not always recognise or record it.
This engaging one-day workshop will help you identify where you are already having impact, strengthen your confidence and capability, and develop practical strategies for working with stakeholders, handling challenge and showcasing your contribution more effectively.
This one-day workshop is designed for RTPs within the GW4 institutes (Bath, Bristol, Cardiff & Exeter) who want to better understand and grow their role in supervision, leadership and championing.
Focusing on practical application rather than formal hierarchy, the day will help you identify where you are already influencing others, build confidence in key interpersonal skills, and explore how stakeholder awareness, psychological drivers, expectation setting and conflict resolution can strengthen your effectiveness.
You will leave with practical tools, clearer language for your contribution, and stronger insight into how to evidence your impact.
By the end of the session, attendees will:
- Understand themselves and others through the lens of the Psychological Drivers
- Distinguish between supervision, championing and leadership
- Recognise where they are already carrying out these roles informally
- Identify the skills and behaviours that make these roles effective
- Consider how to flex and adapt their approach for different stakeholder needs
- Build confidence in expectation setting and conflict resolution
- Think about stakeholders with greater awareness and intentionality
- Capture learning and evidence more effectively for future development, applications and professional visibility
