The British Academy Early Career Researcher Network in the South West

UPDATE 18/03/2024. Please can you be aware GW4 will be stepping back from leading the hub at the end of March 2024. The new leads for the South West hub will be announced shortly. In the meantime please direct any enquires to the British Academy at ecr_network@thebritishacademy.ac.uk.

The British Academy is working in collaboration with the Wolfson Foundation to coordinate a UK-wide network for early career researchers (ECRs) in the humanities and social sciences. In order to deliver the Early-Career Researcher Network in the South West of England, The British Academy has partnered with The GW4 Alliance.

The GW4 Alliance is leading a consortium alongside five institutions in the West of England to manage and coordinate the network. The initial pilot phase of this network will be running until March 2024.

The Early Career Researcher Network is an inclusive and researcher-led network to support the needs and interests of researchers in the humanities and social sciences – including subjects from Social Psychology and Anthropology to Law and History. The Academy are working with the GW4 Alliance and its partners to facilitate events and activities both in the region and at the Academy that will provide an opportunity for capacity building, knowledge exchange and networking

The ECR Network’s West of England consortium, led by the GW4 Alliance, comprises:

  • Bath Spa University
  • Bournemouth University
  • Cardiff University
  • University of Bath
  • University of Bristol
  • University of Exeter
  • University of Gloucester
  • University of Plymouth
  • University of the West of England

So far the South West Hub has delivered both Early Career led and Institutionally led events on a range of topics throughout the region. We have also delivered a successful round of small seed funding grants to enable early, innovative activity where ECRs can test out new ideas and partnerships to generate novel results with the aim of securing more substantial funding in the future.
