Directors Update:

I hope everyone had the opportunity to relax and recharge over the summer holidays. As we embark on a new academic year, it’s a good opportunity to reflect on the successes of the past year and look forward to the exciting plans for the year ahead. The past few months have been full of impactful initiatives and achievements for GW4. We officially launched GW4 Connect, promoting inclusivity and collaboration in research through mentorship and coaching programmes for marginalised and underrepresented postgraduate researchers.

We have also made significant strides towards the strategic priorities we announced in May for the next five years. Continuing the work on accelerating the transition to sustainable Net Zero, the Living Labs for Net Zero report published in July outlined eight priority areas for regional collaboration to achieve sustainable Net Zero in South West England and South Wales. Most recently we were awarded £4.6 million by the AHRC for a GW4 Alliance, Bath and Cardiff-led project to work with communities in Bristol and Swansea to retrofit homes and co-design energy efficient and low carbon housing fit for the future.

Looking forward, I’d like to highlight two exciting opportunities. Firstly, the GW4 Crucible 2024 programme, which will focus on the topic of health inequalities and social justice, is now open for applications. Secondly, we are delighted to be collaborating with the British Academy Early Career Researcher Network South West Hub on a suite of activities aimed at supporting the careers of ECRs in humanities and social sciences.

I am also pleased to welcome Professor Wendy Larner to the GW4 Alliance as Cardiff University’s new President and Vice-Chancellor. We look forward to working with Professor Larner, along with fellow GW4 Council and Board members as we further enhance research collaboration to address global, societal and industrial challenges.

Change doesn't happen alone.
