GW4 Epigenetics Consortium

Background

Epigenetics is an area of strength within the GW4 Universities. Each of the 4 participating Universities has individual strengths within this field, with University of Bristol leading in epigenetic epidemiology and causal analysis methods, the University of Exeter in psychiatric epigenetics, the University of Bath in biochemical mechanisms and physiological function, and Cardiff University in epigenetics and neuroscience.

We will bring together different research strengths to engender synergy and provide an excellent research training environment. The Consortium’s two main priorities will be (i) integrating mechanistic with experimental and population-based expertise, and (ii) fuelling collaborative activity, particularly (but not exclusively) in the area of mental health.

Project Summary

A two day symposium was held, with discussions focused around complementary skills and expertise, and mechanisms that could be explored to fuel the obvious potential synergy. A cohesive and enthusiastic epigenetics community was established, as well as a much clearer recognition of the respective skills and expertise across GW4 in this field. Collaborative discussions continued beyond the award period, with the preparation of bids for research funding calls. The community aimed to continue with the series of research network events.
