GW4 Diversity in Postgraduate Research – thinking beyond admissions

Diversity and inclusivity is important across our institutions, and yet remains a significant challenge. While more attention has been placed on recruitment, addressing these questions doesn’t stop at diversifying students we admit, but instead continues across the entire student journey - from initially attracting students to apply all the way through to graduation and future careers in academia and beyond. To create an equal research environment for students, diversity and inclusivity should be considered throughout postgraduate training and, in many cases, in their research questions, methods, and analyses.

This symposium will bring together academic, professional services staff and postgraduate research students across the GW4 Alliance universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter to consider diversity and inclusivity across the postgraduate research student journey. Discussions on the day will include, but are not limited to:

• how we make sure that inclusive support is available to students from when they join us,

• what considerations need to be addressed by when designing research projects and questions to promote diversity and inclusion, particularly for those working with human participants, or with data produced by human participants,

• how we practically support the ED&I aspirations of our postgraduate research students at all stages of the research cycle.

Drawing on best practice and experiences across the region, the symposium will aim to answer the above challenges and share best practice. We will also ask if there is a special role that postgraduate research students can play in the wider EDI aspirations of the GW4 Universities.

Funding is available to reimburse travel costs if that is not available from your institutions.
