GW4 UKNSR – Network for Sustainable Research

Laboratory-based research is one of the most resource-intensive areas of university activity, consuming large amounts of energy, water, and single-use plastics. In response to the growing climate crisis and the commitments of UK institutions to reduce carbon emissions, this community aims to accelerate the adoption of sustainable research practices. The project supports implementation of the Concordat for Environmental Sustainability and aligns with institutional Climate Action Plans and the UKRI Net Zero Strategy.
The GW4 UKNSR community will deliver a series of collaborative activities including a gap analysis on Concordat delivery, development of shared governance and implementation frameworks, training resource exchange, peer-auditing, equipment sharing, and strategic planning for long-term sustainability. The project will benefit both GW4 institutions and the national UKNSR (formerly known as LEAN) network.
