Director's Update:

I’m delighted to start this newsletter by sharing that, this month, after many months of collaborative working across our four institutions, and with involvement from our industry partners Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), NVIDIA and Arm, GW4 Isambard 3 supercomputer is now officially online.

This project will, not only, supercharge the UK’s digital capabilities and accelerate research into critical areas such as health and sustainability, but is also a tremendous testament to the power of collaboration – something which sits at the heart of the GW4 Alliance.

I am looking forward to seeing Isambard 3 in action, and to exploring how it can be used to advance collaborative research and innovation, especially in GW4’s strategic research areas, to address the global challenges we face.

As I reflect back over the past calendar year, I’m amazed to see how much progress has been made across the Alliance. From hosting five Roadshows across our institutions, to research communities securing major funding awards in areas such as mental health, sustainable Net Zero and research culture, much has been achieved.

GW4’s return on investment reached an all-time high of 25:1, meaning that for every £1 GW4 invests in seed funding research and development, a staggering £25 is generated in external research funding.  Alongside this, we also launched a major new campaign, calling on the government to support postgraduate students to access government-backed childcare schemes.

Take a look at more of our highlights and share yours on social media using #GW4highlights2024.

For now, though, I leave you with this month’s newsletter which includes, among other things, some exciting information about this year’s GW4 Generator Fund and Open Research Prize.

I wish you all a peaceful and relaxing winter break, and I look forward to regrouping in the New Year.

Best wishes,
Jo Jenkinson
GW4 Alliance Director
