Building Communities

Building Communities

A key aim of the GW4 Alliance is to build research communities of scale and capability that will deliver a step change in world-class research. The Building Communities programme is designed to build new, high-quality GW4 research communities or help existing collaborations to build on their work and secure long term sustainable funding.

Calls for Funding

The call for Initiator Funds (Round 7) and Accelerator Funds (Round 6) is now open.

Call open: September 2016
Call closes: 9 December 2016

Further information is available in the Programme Guidelines and Programme FAQs.

The specific additional guidance added to this funding call is:

Initiator applications will be expected to focus their efforts on Official Development Assistance (ODA) compliant activity to enable communities to develop in line with the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) priorities.

Accelerator applications are invited from existing communities and GCRF/ODA compliance will only be considered where appropriate.

Total communities funded 61
Total funds awarded £1,951,127

The opportunities for GW4 are exciting and wide ranging. Four institutions coming together to share their state-of-the-art research equipment and infrastructure, with associated technical support, will dramatically enhance and upgrade the research base in Wales and the South West of England. The same is true for opportunities to build communities of academic interest with the ability to leverage more funding and create greater impact.
